Why we need Jesus Christ

Written by Robin Prijs.

When the earth was created, everything was in perfect shape. When God created Adam and Eve, they were created without any sin. It was heaven on earth. It was where man was created for, to live in this total state of happiness and joy. Before sin entered the world:

- Both man and woman had an direct and intimate relationship with God;
- Both man and woman were able to see God face to face;
- God daily came down to walk with man;
- Man had no awareness of good and evil (total innocence);
- They had eternal life, death didn’t existed;
- They couldn’t feel pain, physically or emotionally;
- They didn’t knew what sorrow was;
- Women had no pain during childbirth;
- They lived in the total blessing of God.

That is the state of pure happiness and joy. But as we all know, satan tried to tempt the woman and succeeded while doing that. The woman tempted the man and succeeded in that as well. God had just given them one condition. They were allowed to do everything they wanted, except eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Now why would God create all this and place such a tree in their neighborhood? And what’s the big deal of eating from that tree, after all, it’s just a fruit they eat.

Every relationship is based on one very important thing. Trust. The relationship Adam and Eve had with God, was based on trust as well. God wanted to trust them, even though He knew that they would disappoint Him. That sounds silly doesn’t it? Why would He trust someone if He knew already that they would disappoint Him? Because trust is something you give to someone you really love, no matter what. He gave them His complete trust and they used that trust against Him. Secondly, they violated the only rule there was. By doing this they had sinned in two ways, they violated His trust and the only rule there was. Everything we do has consequences. The consequence of this was that sin came into the world and into the lives of man.

He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice, a God of truth and without injustice; righteous and upright is He.

Deuteronomy 32:4

God, as the Judge of all the earth, had to judge the actions of Adam and Eve. It works just the same as when you violate the law of your country. When you do so, you have to appear before the judge, who will judge your actions. In such a case there are also consequences. By committing the first sin, the sin was brought into the world. Because God is righteous, He could do nothing else then to take action. These were the consequences:

- Man was no longer able to have a direct and intimate relationship with God;
- They were no longer able to see God face to face;
- God did no longer came down to walk with man;
- Man became fully awareness of good and evil (and lost total innocence);
- They had lost eternal life, death made its appearance;
- They started to feel pain, physically or emotionally;
- They started to know sorrow;
- Women had pain during childbirth;
- They lived under the curse of God.

The world became the opposite of what God intended it to be. That’s always the consequence of sin. The result of that was that all of mankind would also share the same destiny as satan, which is an eternity in hell. Since hell wasn’t made for man, but only for satan, the fallen angels and the demons, God had to come up with a plan to undo the consequences of sin.

In the first place He gave us His law. That law was given to help us to do the right thing. Those who would live according to the law would be blessed, those who didn’t would be cursed. The people who had sinned against this law, could only justify their selves with the sacrifice of an animal. The Bible teaches us that the wage of sin is death (Romans 6:23, Genesis 2:17). With the sacrifice, they would offer the life of the animal in exchange for their own life. They had to do that their whole life and for every single sin they did. But the only thing the law and the sacrifices restored was that they would regain eternal life and that they could live under the blessing of God. All the other consequences of sin were still there. It was a way to undo some of the consequences, but God wouldn’t be God if He didn’t wanted to restore everything. But what sacrifice would be big enough for all of mankind? What sacrifice would be big enough to restore the personal relationship between man and God? There was nothing that was big enough to pay for all of that. Nothing, except one thing... To say it in a better way, nothing except one Person and that person was Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

John 3:16,17

God gave His only Son and by doing that, all the consequences of sin can be undone. Jesus came to this earth, laid everything down and became a man, just like us. He lived among man, did all the things man did, taught about the kingdom of God and eventually died as a criminal on the cross. After three days He rose from the death and completed it all. You can read about His birth, His life, His death and His resurrection in the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Acts). Now Gods plan contains two phases. The first phase was to undo all the consequences of sin. The second phase is to start all over again and to create a new heaven and a new earth. The second phase still have to come to pass. The first phase however, is something that can happen here and now.

When God gave His only Son for us to be sacrificed, He did not only undo all the consequences of sin, He did more then that. Besides all that, Jesus also came to reveal God in a way that He was never revealed in before. Jesus revealed God as a loving and caring Father, instead of an angry and far away God. More studies about this specific revelation can be found at this website as well.

Through everything God does for us, His unfailing and never-ending love is revealed. Why else would God sacrifice His own Son in order to gain your life and your love? God wants to start all over with you. If you want to restore the relationship between you and God as well, even if you never had a relationship with Him, then you can be forgiven today. Jesus paid the price for your life as well and for everything you did wrong and for everything you will do wrong in the rest of your life. Amazing, isn’t it?
